Job Description: Archives Manager
Position Overview:
The Archives Manager is responsible for overseeing the efficient and effective management of archival collections within a Library and Information Science setting. This role requires exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and knowledge of archival principles and practices. The Archives Manager will play a crucial role in preserving and providing access to historical records and materials.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Develop and implement archival policies, procedures, and best practices to ensure the preservation, organization, and accessibility of archival collections.
2. Plan, coordinate, and execute the acquisition, appraisal, arrangement, description, and access to archival materials, including physical and digital records.
3. Establish and maintain accurate and comprehensive records of archival collections, including inventories, finding aids, and databases.
4. Collaborate with stakeholders to identify, prioritize, and manage digitization projects to increase accessibility and preservation of archival materials.
5. Provide reference services and support to researchers, scholars, and other users of archival collections.
6. Supervise and train archival staff and volunteers, ensuring adherence to professional standards and practices.
7. Monitor environmental conditions, such as temperature and humidity, to ensure optimal preservation of archival materials.
8. Develop and manage budgets related to archival initiatives, including acquisitions, preservation supplies, and equipment.
9. Stay current with emerging trends, technologies, and best practices in archival science and information management.
10. Collaborate with colleagues and participate in professional networks, conferences, and workshops to share knowledge and enhance professional development.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Master's degree in Library and Information Science, Archival Studies, or a related field.
2. Proven experience (minimum 3 years) in managing archival collections, including arrangement, description, and preservation.
3. In-depth knowledge of archival principles, standards, and best practices, such as DACS, EAD, and OAIS.
4. Proficiency in archival management systems, databases, and digitization technologies.
5. Strong understanding of preservation techniques for both physical and digital materials.
6. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
7. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with diverse stakeholders.
8. Strong attention to detail and accuracy, ensuring consistent adherence to archival standards.
9. Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills, with the ability to train, mentor, and motivate staff.
10. Ability to adapt to evolving technologies and embrace new tools for efficient archival management.
